5 day Creative Writing Course and Retreat – writing fiction and walking the ancient sites – in the historical landscape of Inis Mór Island, the largest of the Aran Islands, off the West Coast of Galway.

This writing retreat is for the creative traveler and writer who want to discover and develop their writing skills as they source inner creativity and imagination through the medium of creative writing and this mythical landscape.

This is an exclusive residential Writer’s Retreat for ten writers.  The workshop is open to new and established writers.

Kilmurvey House, an 18th century stone built Guest House, is situated within the grounds of the ancient Fort of Dun Aengus and is a few minutes walking distance from sandy Kilmurvey beach. Offering peace and tranquility, Kilmurvey House provides excellent food, character and luxury in old world charm – a haven for any writer.

The Creative Writer’s Workshop guides you through simple and fun right-brain/left-brain exercises which draw upon your imagination as you learn the principles of story creation and how to express your creativity through writing creative fiction. The workshop will focus upon Characterisation, POV (Point of View), Theme, Plot, Setting and Structure.

You will understand how characters are created, how to develop them and learn techniques to imaginatively incorporate your characters into the structure of story. You will also concentrate upon Theme within story and learn how to weave and integrate life experiences into premise for story development.

Throughout the workshop participants are welcome to develop a concept they have previously worked on, or use the workshop to access new writing concepts.

This creative writing course and workshop is a proven success with new and established writers and will inspire you to think like a writer as you develop your abilities to write creatively.

You will be enthralled by guided walks to ancient island sites as you listen to the mythical stories told by Dara Ó Maoildhia, a great storyteller and Celtic scholar living on Inis Mór.

You will also delight in a pony trap ride across the island and mix with locals and musicians as you enjoy island life and entertainment at its best. You will also have time to explore the island in your own time, or to just sit and write, as you overlook the vast Atlantic Ocean.

You will be invigorated as you relax, walk this ancient landscape and write from the heart as your creativity is fired and inspired by this ancient land.

4 day Memoir Writing Course and Retreat in a 14th Century Castle set in the heart of W.B.Yeats countryside amidst 500 acres of secluded woodlands and gardens.  Lovingly restored by its owners Markree Castle is the perfect writer’s haven offering peace, relaxation and good food.

This four day creative writing course and retreat is for writers that want to tap into life experiences and write memoir, or to use those experiences to translate into fiction.  The workshop is based on Irene’s workbook – The Memoir Writing Workbook, which is used as support material throughout the workshop. This is an exclusive residential Writer’s Retreat for ten writers.  The workshop is open to new and established writers.

Using right-brain/left-brain exercises you will develop and integrate significant life memories with narrative as you weave the elements of memoir writing within a creative structure.

It will be a time to discover and enhance your unique writing voice as you define your experiences and learn how to write from the heart of personal understanding.  You will explore theme and subject and its associated meaning as you learn how to focus your memoir.  You will discover how to use and incorporate your retrospective voice into your writing and how to engage with truth in the writing of creative non-fiction.

The Creative Writer's Workshop: Writers Studio / Work-in-Progress in the Burren, Co. Clare, Ireland

Mount Vernon Lodge, Flaggy Shore, New Quay, Burren, Co. Clare

4 day Work-in-Progress Writers' Retreat in the historical home of the accomplished playwright and folklorist Lady Gregory. This is a fitting place for writers to create their masterpieces and enjoy the luxury, peace and tranquility of this Georgian villa.  Mount Vernon is set on the famous Flaggy Shore – the inspirational landscape for Seamus Heaney’s poem…The Flaggy Shore.

The workshop is open to advanced writers, writing fiction or creative non-fiction and limited to 5 participants.  Participants will either have a concept in development, or words already on the page.  This workshop is not for participants new to writing. 

The Writers' Retreat comprises three elements:
*Private Story Consultations with Irene Graham
*The Language of Story Writing Course
*Personal Time to develop and write your story

The workshop is for writers that want to dedicate four days to develop and concentrate on their writing in a relaxed atmosphere with other writers.  The workshop will allow writer the time and space to develop their writing while benefiting from private story consultation and daily group workshops on the art of language in story writing. Evenings will also be utilized for further writing discussions.

On your doorstep is the Flaggy Shore coastline of north-west Clare and the backdrop of the Burren mountains – a haven for walking, no matter what time of year.  Mount Vernon Lodge boasts luxury at its best and each participant has a private room en suite.

The writing group will be the sole occupiers of Mount Vernon Lodge and will prepare and share meals. Further info upon booking.  There are also many local quality restaurants on your doorstep in the village of Kinvara.
